Hollawind 2023: Save the drama for the stage

Finally they are taking place again, the theatre festivals that were allowed to take a break for three years. After a mini-edition sapperlot in 2022, the Hollawind children's theatre festival took to the stages of the Astra and Forum Brixen from 11 to 14 May.

At the invitation of the Theatre Pedagogical Centre Bressanone, four international groups came to Bressanone. Old friends from England, the Czech Republic, Estonia and Israel showed their plays alongside five theatre workshops from the TPZ - and not only. The children demonstrated in workshops that they speak the same language - namely the language of theatre, on an open stage the children aged between 10 and 14 were able to show what they were capable of and of course there was room for celebration. To celebrate that people can finally meet again without restrictions, that they can make theatre together, that it is about the really important issues on stage and that children's theatre enthusiasm can be lived without borders.

Endlich finden sie wieder statt, die Theaterfestivals, die für drei Jahre pausieren durften. Nach einem sapperlot in Miniauflage im Jahr 2022 ging von 11. bis 14. Mai das Kindertheaterfestival Hollawind über die Bühnen des Astra und Forum Brixen.

Auf Einladung des Theaterpädagogischen Zentrums Brixen kamen vier internationale Gruppen nach Brixen. Altbekannte Freunde aus England, der Tschechischen Republik, aus Estland und Israel zeigten neben fünf Theaterwerkstätten aus dem TPZ ihre Stücke – und nicht nur. Die Kinder stellten in Workshops unter Beweis, dass sie dieselbe Sprache sprechen – nämlich die Sprache des Theaters, auf einer offenen Bühne konnten die Kinder im Alter zwischen 10 und 14 Jahren zeigen, was sie draufhatten und natürlich gab es Raum zum Feiern. Zum Feiern, dass man sich endlich wieder ohne Einschränkungen treffen, miteinander Theater machen kann, dass es um die wirklich wichtigen Themen geht auf der Bühne und dass Kindertheaterbegeisterung ohne Grenzen gelebt werden kann.

The plays, however, gave an inkling that many things still need to be worked through. Being imprisoned in a small space was the theme of several plays, such as "Zwölf" (Twelve) by the Jeansblau Theatre Workshop from Brixen or "Promised Neverland" by the Flying Cow ensemble from Estonia. The struggle against an intangible power was shown in the play "Anonymous Ilfrit" by the Central Youth Theatre from England, or the theme of intrigue and fear was taken up by the theatre workshop Knallrot in their play "Hexenjagd".

Die Stücke jedoch ließen erahnen, dass noch so manches aufgearbeitet werden muss. Das Eingesperrtsein auf engem Raum wurde mehrmals thematisiert – etwa beim Stück „Zwölf“ der Theaterwerkstatt Jeansblau aus Brixen oder dem Stück „Promised Neverland“, welches das Ensemble Flying Cow aus Estland mitbrachte. Der Kampf gegen eine ungreifbare Macht wurde im Stück „Anonymous Ilfrit“ des Central Youth Theatre aus England gezeigt oder das Thema Intrigen und Angst von der Theaterwerkstatt Knallrot in ihrem Stück „Hexenjagd“ aufgegriffen.

Not so cheerful topics were also discussed in the play leaders' conference. Above all, an increase in psychological problems among young people was noted, who are under enormous pressure and so often no longer have the energy for leisure projects like theatre. In contrast to the Brixen Theatre Pedagogical Centre, the other organisations have suffered from a drop in membership and the theatre players are only slowly coming back.

Auch in der Spielleiterkonferenz wurde nicht ganz so fröhliche Themen besprochen. Vor allem eine Zunahme der psychischen Probleme bei Jugendlichen wurde festgestellt, die unter gewaltigem Druck stehen und so oft keine Kraft mehr für Freizeitprojekte wie Theater haben. Im Gegensatz zum Theaterpädagogischen Zentrum Brixen hatten die anderen Organisationen unter Einbrüchen bei ihren Mitgliedern zu leiden und erst langsam kommen die Theaterspieler:innen zurück.

Fortunately, however, not only serious topics were on the programme. Funny plays, such as a commedia dell'arte production from Israel, a witty and tangy "War of the Buttons", a loving story about a girl who suddenly exists twice in "Anna times two" and a collage about a magical school "Magical ... what?" from the TPZ Brixen rounded off the festival and made it a wonderful experience for all participants.

The festival was made possible by the support of the Provincial Government - Office for Youth Work and Office for Culture, the Region, the Municipality of Brixen and the Südtiroler Sparkasse Foundation. In addition, the numerous people who helped to keep the costs of the festival low through donations in kind or their unpaid cooperation - especially the host families. 

Zum Glück standen aber nicht nur ernste Themen auf dem Programm. Lustige Stücke, wie eine Commedia-dell‘-Arte-Produktion aus Israel, einem witzig-spritzigen „Krieg der Knöpfe“, einer liebevollen Geschichte über ein Mädchen, das es plötzlich zweimal gibt in „Anna mal zwei“ und einer Collage über eine magische Schule „Magische … was?“ aus dem TPZ Brixen rundeten das Festival ab und machten es zu einer wunderschönen Erfahrung für alle Teilnehmer:innen.

Ermöglicht wurde das Festival durch die Unterstützung vonseiten der Landesregierung – Amt für Jugendarbeit und Amt für Kultur, der Region, der Gemeinde Brixen und der Stiftung Südtiroler Sparkasse. Außerdem durch die zahlreichen Menschen, die durch Sachspenden oder ihre unentgeltliche Mitarbeit halfen, die Kosten für das Festival niedrig zu halten – besonders die Gastfamilien. 

At the Theatre Pedagogical Centre Bressanone, there was only a short breather after the Hollawind, because at the beginning of June they went to Hungary for the meeting of the international youth theatre network EDERED. Edered meant ten days of workshops with 120 young people from all over Europe and Israel, which ended on 10 June with a performance in the National Theatre in Pécs. In the general assembly of the Edered network, the Theatre Pedagogical Centre was accepted as a member and is now allowed to represent South Tyrol there.

Meanwhile, the theatre workshop Honiggelb is preparing for a big international project in London, which will be performed twice at the Royal Albert Hall, and the theatre workshop Zinnober is working on a new play for the youth theatre festival in New Delhi.

And then the applications for the International Meeting for Youth Theatre sapperlot 2024 are already underway.

Everything is back to normal, in other words. Fortunately.

Im Theaterpädagogischen Zentrum Brixen gab es nach dem Hollawind nur eine kurze Verschnaufpause, denn Anfang Juni ging es nach Ungarn zum Treffen des internationalen Jugendtheaternetzwerks EDERED. Edered bedeutete zehn Tage Workshops mit 120 Jugendlichen aus ganz Europa und Israel, die am 10. Juni mit einer Aufführung im Nationaltheater in Pécs endeten. In der Vollversammlung des Edered Netzwerkes wurde das Theaterpädagogische Zentrum als Mitglied aufgenommen und darf nun dort Südtirol vertreten.

Währenddessen bereitet sich die Theaterwerkstatt Honiggelb auf ein großes internationales Projekt in London vor, das zweimal in der Royal Albert Hall aufgeführt wird, und die Theaterwerkstatt Zinnober bastelt an einem neuen Stück für das Jugendtheaterfestival in Neu Delhi.

Und dann laufen bereits die Anmeldungen für das Internationale Treffen für Jugendtheater sapperlot 2024.
