Edered - searching the way

In 1982, the idea for EDERED, a network for theatre for children and young people, was born in the Council of Europe. Forty years later, it is still as lively and active as on the first day, and since 10 June it has a new member: South Tyrol.

Hungary is all about theatre this year. In addition to the General Assembly of the International Amateur Theatre Association (IATA), the Theatre Olympics and EDERED, the European Drama Encounter for young people between the ages of 14 and 22, took place. The TPZ was there. Together with more than a hundred young people from twelve European countries, the players aged between 16 and 21 faced the motto that probably moves many young people of our time: "Seeking the way".

Edered – Auf der Suche nach dem Weg

1982 wurde im Europarat die Idee für das EDERED, ein Netzwerk für das Kinder- und Jugendtheater, geboren. Vierzig Jahre danach ist es noch genauso lebendig und aktiv wie am ersten Tag und seit 10. Juni hat es ein neues Mitglied: Südtirol.

Ungarn steht in diesem Jahr ganz im Zeichen des Theaters. Neben der Generalversammlung des Internationalen Amateurtheaterverbands IATA fand die Theaterolympiade statt und eben auch das EDERED, das European Drama Encounter für Jugendliche zwischen 14 und 22 Jahren. Das TPZ war mit dabei. Gemeinsam mit über hundert Jugendlichen aus zwölf Staaten Europas stellten sich die Spielerinnen zwischen 16 und 21 Jahren dem Motto, das wohl viele Jugendliche unserer Zeit bewegt: „Seeking the way“.

In search of the way, they improvised, worked out scenes under the guidance of internationally recognised artists - the TPZ provided Jonathan Troi as workshop leader, who held a workshop together with David Alexander from England - and assembled them into an artistically high-quality performance under the guidance of artistic director Attila Eck (H), which was staged at the National Theatre in Pécs.

Auf der Suche nach dem Weg improvisierten sie, erarbeiteten unter der Anleitung von international anerkannten Künstlern Szenen – das TPZ stellte Jonathan Troi als Workshop Leader, der mit David Alexander aus England zusammen einen Workshop hielt – und bauten diese unter der Leitung des künstlerischen Leiters Attila Eck (H) zu einer künstlerisch hochwertigen Aufführung zusammen, die im Nationaltheater in Pécs aufgeführt wurde.

They were intense days full of theatre and full of unforgettable moments. In addition to the workshops, the organisers had come up with many small and big activities with one main aim: to promote exchange among the young people. There was a National Evening and a National Market, an Open Stage, Special Skills Workshops (including a Creative Writing Workshop with Heidi Troi), a Beach Day at the wonderful lake of Orfü and one evening the young people learned Hungarian folk dances. There was even an EDERED song. To the melody of a Hungarian folk song, a song text was created from the participants' impressions, and the whole thing was rehearsed in two voices during the Encounter.

There was so much to do in one day that the participants could hardly catch their breath. Within a short period of time, they grew together into a well-coordinated ensemble and proved that borders are nothing but lines on paper, as Edered President Katrin Janser put it at the final performance.

Es waren intensive Tage voller Theater und voller unvergesslicher Momente. Neben den Workshops hatten sich die Organisatoren viele kleine und große Aktivitäten ausgedacht, die vor allem eines zum Ziel hatten: den Austausch unter den Jugendlichen zu fördern. Es gab einen National Evening und einen National Market, eine Open Stage, Special Skills Workshops (unter anderem einen Creative Writing Workshop mit Heidi Troi) einen Beach Day am wundervollen See von Orfü und an einem Abend lernten die Jugendlichen ungarische Volkstänze. Sogar einen eigenen EDERED-Song gab es. Zur Melodie eines ungarischen Volksliedes wurde aus den Eindrücken der Teilnehmer:innen ein Songtext gebastelt und das Ganze im Laufe des Encounters zweistimmig einstudiert. So viel gab es innerhalb eines Tages zu tun, dass die Teilnehmer kaum zum Luftholen kamen – geschweige denn dazu, ihre Familien zu vermissen. Innerhalb kurzer Zeit wuchsen sie zu einem aufeinander eingespielten Ensemble zusammen und bewiesen, dass Grenzen nichts als Striche auf dem Papier sind, wie Edered-Präsidentin Katrin Janser es anlässlich der Final Performance formulierte.

The idea for EDERED, the European Drama Encounter, goes back to a Council of Europe initiative presented in 1979 under the title "Children and Culture in Contemporary Europe". The Council of Europe's Children's Drama Encounter emerged from this initiative in 1982. In 1988, the then Theater im Regenbogen was allowed to take part in one of the first EDERED Encounters with a group of children.

Now, after almost forty years, the TPZ Brixen has taken part again and can proudly call ourselves part of the EDERED family. The TPZ team is currently in the process of gathering ideas on what the EDERED Encounter 2027 could look like. Because then South Tyrol will be able to welcome the EDERED family. We are already looking forward to it!

Die Idee zum EDERED, dem European Drama Encounter, geht auf eine Initiative des Europarats zurück, die 1979 unter dem Titel "Children and Culture in Contemporary Europe" (Kinder und Kultur im heutigen Europa) vorgestellt wurde. Aus dieser Initiative ging 1982 das Children's Drama Encounter des Europarats hervor. 1988 durfte das damalige Theater im Regenbogen bereits mit einer Kindergruppe an einem der ersten EDERED- Encounters teilnehmen.

Nun, nach beinahe vierzig Jahren, war das TPZ Brixen knüpfen wir wieder dort an und dürfen uns stolz Teil der EDERED-Familie nennen. Gerade ist das TPZ Team dabei, Ideen zusammenzutragen, wie das EDERED-Encounter 2027 aussehen könnte. Denn dann darf Südtirol die EDERED-Familie willkommen heißen. Wir freuen uns schon darauf!
